This video is for anyone who has a dog that doesnt like you to touch their face to check and clean their eyes. Vinnie is a 12 year old rescue dog who I have had for 3 weeks now, on his notes it says that he has bitten the staff at the shelter when they have tried to clean his eyes, he suffers from an eye condition that means his eyes need cleaning on a daily basis. Well done Sian – I’m sure this will help a lot of people – I used the same technique for ear cleaning and nail clipping.
Excellent Sian – I have used this technique on my chocolate lab Tillie when using ear drops – building up slowly and treating when she let me first touch her ears, building up to being able to hold the drops against her ears, then actually being able to put the drops in!

Awesome work with Vinnie! How long was this training session? He’s doing so well! Clicker training can work wonders for these kind of fear aggressive dogs. . it’s a shame more people with dogs like Vinnie don’t use this kind of method. . . even if it was just voice marking because the fix is really pretty simple when you take it slow and don’t rush your dog into an uncomfortable position. I look forward to seeing more of Vinnie in the future! Keep up the great work with him!

great video sian! its great that you chose to adopt a older “problem” dog. many people feel that they are untrainable and not worth the time and effort to rehabilitate them. nothing can be further then the truth!
this is not only a good example of helping to build trust with yout dog, but a good example of calming signals. vinnie was displaying alot of calming signals when you first started out, but calmed down and actually seemed to be showing interest in what you were doing towards the end:)
